Abia Disability Commission: PAD Urges Alex Otti To Shun Out-going Administration’s Board Appointment

by Sejoro Ekundayo

Progressive Abians with Disabilities (PAD) has called on Governor-elect Dr. Alex Chioma Otti not to recognize appointments into the Board of the State’s Disability Commission made by the outgoing Government.

The call was made in a statement signed by group’s Coordinator, Ms. Chinenye Sophia Ogboso, Eld. Alozie Ibeawuchi (member), Comr. Stanley Onyebuchi (member) and Mr. Friday Onugha (member) on Wednesday, 26 April, 2023 in Abia state.

The signatories to the statement said: “this is important as Abians with disabilities would sincerely wait for Otti’s swearing-in and appointment of members of the Board at the right time.”

According to Ms. Ogboso: “the organization is concerned over an attempt by misguided elements within the disability community to arm-twist the Secretary to the Abia State Government to announce them as Chairman and members of the Abia State Disability Commission without undergoing due process.

“This dubious effort designed to paint Abians with disabilities in bad light will create unrest within the community, and misunderstanding with the Dr. Otti, Governor-Elect of Abia State.

“The Abia State Commission for Welfare of Disabled Persons Law 2022 provides that appointment of the Chairman and members of the Commission shall be done by the Governor on the advice of the Commissioner, subject to confirmation of the House.

Regrettably this process has not taken place and the Abia State House of Assembly is yet to receive any list from the Governor, let alone confirm.

PAD called on the out going Governor and Secretary to the State Government to disassociate themselves from dubious individuals parading as representatives of the Abia Disability Community.

“We request the out going government to avoid unsubstantial appointments to the Board of Abia State Disability Commission as such action would tarnish its image.”

The group also urged the general public to beware of those dubious Persons with Disability whose sole aim is to make governance difficult for the incoming Otti administration.
