Comptroller, Nigeria Correctional Service, Adamawa State Command, Malam Umar Audu says, around 217 inmates are to be granted amnesty by the Federal and State Governments in the state.
The Comptroller disclosed this to Radio Nigeria Correspondent in Yola Abdullahi Tukur on Thursday.
He said, amidst COVID-19 in the country, the federal government has directed that all custodian centers to be decongest to avoid the spread of the virus.
Malam Umar Audu, stated that, the federal government is granting amnesty to 171 inmates, while the state government is also granting amnesty to 46 inmates across the 18 custodian centers in the state.
The Comptroller said, those to be granted amnesty are those inmates with good conduct and also those that about to finish their jail terms.
On the occurrence of COVID-19, the Command had taken measures to prevent the spread of the virus amongst inmates that include supply of soaps and sanitisers as well as sensitising and educating inmates on the importance of hygiene and regular hand washing, the Comptroller said.
Malam Umar Audu also added that he has directed all personnel to make sure they wash their hands, use sanitisers and wear face masks before discharging their daily duties, as well as adopt social distance with the inmates at the centers.
There is a total of two thousand four hundred and sixty-nine inmates serving various jail terms across the eighteen correctional centers in Adamawa state.
