Secretary to the Edo State Government, Barr. Osarodion Ogie has stated the readiness of the State Government to fast track passage of the State’s Disability Bill through the house of Assembly.

Barrister Ogie said this during an advocacy visit to his office by the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Edo State Chapter.

Earlier in her address, the State JONAPWD chairman, Ann Ojugo emphasized the importance of recognizing the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

She pointed out that lack of laws protecting PWDs have led to denial of opportunities and violation of human dignity.

Ojugo added that PWDs can’t access public infrastructures and the negative attitude of people toward PWDs have both affected their self esteem and deprived them of economic, social and political opportunities.

She stressed that if the State’s effort towards poverty reduction would be achieved, then a Disability law should be enacted as that remains the first step towards achievement.

“PWDs are the poorest of the poor so whatever measures would enhance their productivity is an effort to reduce poverty.” She said.
