The government of Zimbabwe has reiterated its commitment to disability rights by urging public and private employers to prioritise the recruitment of persons with disabilities.
According to a report by ZBC News, a TV BRICS partner, the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Edgar Moyo, stressed the urgency of bridging the employment gap faced by people with disabilities.
“All ministries have been directed to prioritise candidates with disabilities during recruitment,” Moyo said. “If any qualified individual is being sidelined because of their disability, they should report it. We have inspectors at the national, provincial, and district levels ready to respond.”
The government’s inclusive agenda also extends to education. Through the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM), efforts are underway to ensure children with special needs receive quality education. Community-level school committees have been tasked with giving priority to learners with disabilities.
Zimbabwe’s commitment to disability inclusion is anchored in its 2021 National Disability Policy, which aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
