World Hearing Day: Disability Agency, Group Offer Free Hearing Screening for Children with Disabilities

by Inclusive News Network

The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and Nigerbell Hearing Centres Ltd have conducted free hearing tests for selected school children with disabilities to mark the World Hearing Day 2026 in Lagos.

The screening exercise took place on March 3 at the Nigerbell Hearing Centres and formed part of activities commemorating this year’s theme, “From Communities to Classrooms: Hearing Care for All Children,” which focuses on improving access to hearing care for children.

During the event, audiologist Dr Barnabas Bem Vangerwua highlighted the importance of early detection of hearing loss, warning that untreated hearing problems can hinder a child’s speech development, learning capacity, and social interaction.

He advised parents to ensure that babies undergo hearing screening shortly after birth, explaining that early diagnosis allows healthcare providers to intervene quickly and improve developmental outcomes for children with hearing impairments.

Vangerwua also advocated the inclusion of routine hearing screening in primary healthcare centres across Lagos State, noting that this would make hearing tests more accessible to families and support early intervention efforts.
