First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on government authorities and stakeholders to intensify efforts toward inclusive policies that promote equal participation of blind and visually impaired persons in national development.
In a message marking World Braille Day 2026, observed on January 4, Mrs Tinubu emphasised the importance of building inclusive systems that support independence and dignity for persons living with visual impairments, especially in an era of rapid digital advancement.
She noted that inclusion should be reflected in concrete actions rather than symbolic commitments, stressing the need for strong institutional frameworks that guarantee equal access to opportunities.
Describing Braille as a vital communication tool, the First Lady said it remains central to literacy, empowerment, and independence for blind and visually impaired persons, particularly as digital technologies reshape access to information.
“Today, on World Braille Day 2026, we celebrate Braille as an important tool of inclusion, dignity, and independence for blind and visually impaired persons,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu warned that the increasing reliance on digital platforms could marginalise persons with visual impairments if accessibility is not deliberately prioritised.
“As the world becomes increasingly digital, it is imperative that we bridge the digital gap by ensuring accessibility in a digital age,” she stated.
She added that integrating Braille with modern technology is key to ensuring equal access to education, information, and economic opportunities.
“Braille, when integrated with technology, guarantees equal access to information, education, and opportunities,” she said.
The First Lady reaffirmed that an inclusive society strengthens national unity and development, calling on government institutions, the private sector, and civil society organisations to work together to advance accessibility standards across the country.
