by Inclusive News Network

United Nigeria Airlines has suspended a staff member following allegations of maltreatment involving a passenger with reduced mobility, Ms. Doris Akonanya, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the airline’s Public Relations Officer, Chibuike Uloka, confirmed that the staff member would remain on suspension pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation. The airline, however, did not disclose the identity of the employee involved.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday during the check-in process for Flight UN0526 from Abuja to Yenagoa, where concerns were raised over the handling of the passenger’s condition. An internal report cited allegations of unprofessional conduct, prompting public concern about the treatment of passengers with disabilities and other vulnerable travellers.

Uloka reiterated that United Nigeria Airlines maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct, discrimination, or abuse, stressing the airline’s commitment to ensuring safe, respectful, and accessible services for all passengers, particularly those requiring additional assistance.

The airline also extended a public apology to Ms. Akonanya and her family, acknowledging the emotional distress the incident may have caused. It described the development as regrettable and inconsistent with its service standards and corporate values.

United Nigeria Airlines further disclosed that it has maintained direct communication with the passenger and her family while engaging relevant stakeholders to fully establish the facts surrounding the incident. The airline assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken upon the conclusion of the investigation.
