UNILORIN Champions Inclusive Education, Launches Centre for Students with Special Needs

by Inclusive News Network

In a major step toward inclusivity and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has established a Centre for Students with Special Needs. This initiative is designed to make learning more accessible for all students, particularly those with disabilities.

The centre builds upon the success of the university’s Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf, further enhancing educational opportunities for vulnerable groups.

During the university’s 39th convocation ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN) highlighted the institution’s commitment to supporting the diverse needs of its student body. He noted, “Everyone has some form of special need, and this centre will cater to a wider range of vulnerabilities.”

Professor Egbewole also emphasized the ongoing efforts to redesign the university’s infrastructure to ensure full accessibility, not just for students with disabilities but for all. This initiative echoes the goals of the SDGs, particularly Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable education, and Goal 8, which seeks to foster inclusive economic growth and decent work for all.

By making its campus more inclusive, UNILORIN is setting an example for other Nigerian universities, aligning with SDG Goal 10’s call to reduce inequalities and Goal 11’s focus on creating inclusive, safe, and sustainable communities. The university’s efforts to monitor progress in this area also align with SDG Goal 17’s emphasis on data collection and accountability.

With its Centre for Students with Special Needs, UNILORIN is demonstrating its leadership in the push for accessible education in Nigeria, paving the way for a more inclusive future in higher learning.
