The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has restated its resolve to build a more inclusive service environment for corps members with disabilities, with plans to upgrade facilities, adjust postings, and expand empowerment opportunities.
Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, made this known during a recent engagement in Abuja, where he assured that the welfare of corps members with special needs remains a top priority.
He stressed that physical disability should never limit a graduate’s opportunity to serve the nation, adding that inclusivity is central to the values of the NYSC.
As part of concrete steps toward inclusion, General Ahmed said orientation camps across the country will undergo improvements to ensure accessibility. These include modifications to accommodation blocks, restrooms, and training grounds to better serve corps members with mobility challenges.
“Our aim is to create an environment where every corps member feels supported and valued throughout the service year,” he said.
The NYSC boss also disclosed that the scheme will be more deliberate in posting corps members with disabilities for their primary assignments, avoiding hard-to-reach locations with inadequate infrastructure.
In addition, he revealed that the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme will be adapted to provide targeted training for corps members with disabilities, enabling them to acquire practical skills and build sustainable livelihoods after service.
General Ahmed noted that the initiative aligns with the belief that persons with disabilities possess immense potential and can contribute meaningfully to national development when given the right support.
