National disability leaders, led by the President of the National Association of Physically Challenged Persons (NAPCP), Comrade Ridwan Muhammad Abdullahi, have commended the Gombe State Government for its commitment to disability inclusion and social justice. The commendation came during a strategic advocacy visit to the Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (GSCPWD) as part of a nationwide campaign to strengthen disability rights enforcement across Nigeria.
Speaking during the visit, Comrade Ridwan congratulated the disability community in Gombe on the passage of the Gombe State Disability Law and the successful establishment of the Commission, describing the state as a model of purposeful leadership and inclusive governance. He praised Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his strong political will and unwavering support for policies that promote the full participation of persons with disabilities in governance and development.
The NAPCP President also applauded the leadership of GSCPWD for its rapid progress and impactful initiatives, noting that the unity among disability groups in the state has significantly enhanced advocacy efforts. He emphasized the importance of fully implementing the National Disability Act, particularly the accessibility provisions, to guarantee equal access to education, healthcare, transportation, information, and economic opportunities for persons with disabilities.
In his response, the Executive Chairman of GSCPWD, Ishiyaku Adamu, expressed appreciation to the association for choosing Gombe as the starting point of its nationwide advocacy drive. He disclosed that the Commission, with support from the World Bank, has developed a Standard Accessibility Policy and is working with the Ministry of Justice to enforce compliance.
He added that plans are underway to conduct capacity-building programmes for relevant MDAs and to introduce Disability Accessibility Compliance Certificates for public construction projects, reinforcing Gombe State’s growing reputation as a leader in disability inclusion.
