It was a night of history, hope, and empowerment on Saturday as Nigeria staged its first-ever Albinism Advocacy Pageant, a bold initiative dedicated to inclusion and the fight against discrimination.

Themed “Beauty in Inclusivity”, the groundbreaking event took place at the Luxury Events Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, and drew passionate advocates, disability rights leaders, and members of the public eager to witness a shift in how society views albinism.

More than just a beauty contest, the pageant redefined the stage as a platform for advocacy and leadership. Contestants displayed not only their elegance but also their intelligence, creativity, and commitment to driving change within their communities.

Founder of Misty Glam Company, Misturah Abisola Owolabi, captured the heart of the initiative:

“This crown is more than a title. It represents a voice. Women with albinism have long been sidelined, and this platform is about giving them visibility as leaders in industries like fashion, media, and modeling.”

The event also welcomed prominent personalities, including Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, General Manager of LASODA, who served on the judging panel.

In a moving finale, the winner emerged as Nigeria’s first Albinism Advocacy Queen, stepping into the role of spokesperson and community advocate. She will spearhead awareness campaigns nationwide, challenging stereotypes and championing inclusion.

The event, widely hailed as a milestone, echoed a resounding message: that beauty is not defined by appearance alone but by courage, purpose, and the power to inspire change.

College of Education to Launch Special Education Program in 2026

Bauchi — The Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare, in Bauchi State, has announced plans to introduce its first-ever Special Education program under the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) scheme next year.

The Provost of the college, Prof. Asabe Sadiya Muhammad, disclosed this during the Walimah ceremony for the 2025 graduating members of the Special Needs Students Association (SNESA), held on Saturday at the Dr. Musa Babayo Lecture Hall.

Prof. Muhammad said the new program aims to expand opportunities for students with disabilities while equipping them with relevant academic and vocational skills.

“We are committed to training our special needs students in a wide range of skills. These include automobile-related skills such as driving, car repairs, motorcycle maintenance, and bicycle repairs. The college has the facilities and expertise to empower them for meaningful careers,” she stated.

She further revealed that her son, an automobile engineer, would also be involved in the training process, working with other professionals to mentor students.

In addition, the Provost highlighted plans for agricultural training tailored for students with disabilities. “Our students will be engaged in fish farming, animal husbandry, cattle rearing, goat farming, and even snake farming. These skills will not only provide them with knowledge but also help them generate income and grow their businesses,” she explained.

Students expressed appreciation to the Provost and college management for introducing the Special Education program and offered prayers for their continued success.

The Opeoluwa Sotonwa Foundation (OSF), an international nonprofit dedicated to education, mentorship, and advocacy, has announced the recipients of its 2025 scholarships and fellowships, reinforcing its mission to empower Nigeria’s Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Now in its third year, the Foundation continues to scale its global impact, investing in young leaders who embody resilience, innovation, and a vision for inclusive progress.

Founded in 2022, OSF is built on the belief that the Deaf community holds extraordinary leadership potential that must be nurtured and recognized. This year’s awards span multiple categories, from its core scholarships to new leadership prizes and fellowships in law.

Special Eagles Confident Ahead of 2026 Amputee World Cup

Nigeria’s Amputee Football National Team, the Special Eagles, are optimistic about their chances at the 2026 Amputee World Cup in Costa Rica.

Speaking in Lagos, the players called for greater government and private sector support to boost their preparations for the global competition.

Defender Nnanna Nwakpa, who has been with the team for five years, described amputee football as a turning point in his recovery after amputation.
“Football became therapeutic, it helped me mentally and played a big role in my recovery,” he said, recalling Nigeria’s emphatic 11–0 win over Burundi at the 2024 Amputee Nations Cup in Egypt.

He commended the federation, led by President Paul Maduaku, for grassroots initiatives such as Kick for Love and zonal championships, which provide more scouting opportunities for young players.

Another defender, Michael Joel, who lost his leg in 2018, said passion for the game remained his driving force.
“It’s not about money, but the love of the game. With the mix of home- and foreign-based players, I believe we’re ready to face strong European teams,” he said.

Eze Chikenedu, also a central defender, stressed the importance of financial backing.
“We’re 100 percent ready because we already qualified. The main challenge now is finance, but with proper support, we will be well prepared,” he said.

Head coach Gbenga Dosunmu assured Nigerians of the team’s determination.
“By God’s grace, this is not the first time. We have what it takes, and if well packaged, performance will be very high,” he said while appealing for sponsors.

The Special Eagles remain hopeful that increased visibility and support will strengthen their preparations as they set sights on World Cup glory.

24 Million Nigerians Living with Sight Loss – Professor

At least 24 million Nigerians are currently living with one form of sight loss or another, the Vice Chancellor of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, Professor Jesse Uneke, has disclosed.

Professor Uneke, a Medical Parasitologist and Health Policy/Systems expert, made this revelation during a press briefing at the unveiling of the university’s Free Eye Care Initiative and Eye Research Programme, held at the Institute for Eye Health and Visual Sciences Research (IEHVSR) in Ebonyi State.

Citing the Nigeria National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey, the Vice Chancellor explained that about 4.2 percent of Nigerians over 40 years are blind, while 4.25 million adults in the same age category suffer from moderate to severe visual impairment.

He lamented that 84 percent of blindness cases in Nigeria are preventable, often linked to cataracts, uncorrected refractive errors, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, infections, and trauma.

“Blindness in Nigeria is strongly associated with increasing age, female gender, and poor literacy levels. Unfortunately, the majority of these cases could have been avoided,” he stressed.

To tackle the crisis, DUFUHS, with support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has established an ultra-modern Eye Centre and the IEHVSR, a world-class facility for patient care, research, and training.

Through its Free Eye Care Initiative, the university has treated 2,412 patients since February 2025, including 1,352 for refractive errors, 627 for cataracts, 168 for glaucoma, and 265 for other conditions. In addition, 1,000 eyeglasses—comprising 400 reading glasses and 600 prescription glasses—were distributed at no cost.

Professor Uneke emphasized that the centre brings together ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, biomedical engineers, and ICT experts to provide integrated eye care services, particularly targeting underserved rural communities in Ebonyi and beyond.

He added that the initiative aligns with the World Health Organization’s SPECS 2030 agenda, which aims to expand access to affordable refractive error services globally.

Reaffirming DUFUHS’s commitment, the Vice Chancellor said the university would continue to invest in research, training, and community service in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with the ultimate goal of reducing medical and educational tourism.

IPAC, Foundation Seal Pact to Empower Women with Disabilities in Politics

In a historic move for Nigeria’s democracy, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and Cedar Seed Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote the political inclusion of women with disabilities.

Announcing the partnership, IPAC National Chairman, Mr. Yusuf Mammam, underscored the importance of inclusivity to democratic growth. “Democracy is about participation. When any group is left out—whether intentionally or by neglect—it weakens the system. For democracy to be complete, persons with disabilities must be part of the process. That is why IPAC is committed to working with Cedar Seed Foundation to achieve total inclusion,” he said.

Mammam disclosed that IPAC has made provisions for all 19 political parties under its umbrella to appoint disability desk officers. He added that the council is pushing for political parties to make expression of interest forms free for PWDs, encouraging them to register with the party of their choice and participate actively.

For Mrs. Lois Auta, Executive Director of Cedar Seed Foundation, the agreement represents a breakthrough for women with disabilities seeking a voice in politics. She described the day as “beautiful and historic,” stressing that the Disability Act already recognizes the right of PWDs to political participation and representation.

“We want to see women with disabilities included not just in conversations but in elective and appointive positions. This MoU is about making that vision a reality,” she affirmed.

Auta urged political parties and stakeholders to ensure PWDs are fully accommodated. She also challenged women with disabilities to take up space by becoming active members of political parties: “Don’t just join; participate, attend meetings, and contribute. That is the true power of representation.”

Looking ahead, Cedar Seed Foundation will roll out advocacy campaigns to push for the five per cent reservation for women with disabilities and support the Reserved Seats Bill to secure their place in political leadership.

Auta also reminded PWDs of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise, urging them to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards to strengthen their voice in the 2027 elections.

Governor Umo Eno’s Administration Delivers Lifeline to Persons with Disabilities in Rural Akwa Ibom

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has been commended for his administration’s impactful initiatives targeted at improving the lives of persons with disabilities (PWDs), particularly those in rural communities.

Under his leadership, the state has introduced a series of welfare and empowerment programs that directly address food security, healthcare, education, and political inclusion for PWDs.

One of the most notable efforts is the provision of free food distribution across Local Government Areas. By ensuring that food items are delivered directly to the doorsteps of persons with disabilities, the initiative has not only tackled hunger but also removed the burden of transportation costs for beneficiaries. The Governor further demonstrated his commitment by enrolling PWDs across the state into the Akwa Ibom Health Insurance Scheme, ensuring access to essential healthcare.

In addition, the establishment of Arise Compassionate Homes across senatorial districts has provided shelter and support services to persons with disabilities, reflecting what many describe as Governor Eno’s compassionate style of leadership.

Education has also been a major priority. Through the creation of a ₦100 million Educational Intervention Fund for students with disabilities in public higher institutions, the Governor has opened academic opportunities for many who once thought higher education was beyond reach. A notable success story includes the sponsorship of a visually impaired law student who later secured employment with the State Ministry of Justice — a development that has inspired hope across the disability community.

On the political front, the Governor has strengthened inclusivity by appointing a Special Assistant and a Personal Assistant on Disability Matters, as well as a sign language interpreter. These appointments, according to disability advocates, demonstrate his belief in the potential and contributions of persons with disabilities while aligning with the Arise Agenda’s vision of inclusivity.

Speaking on the Governor’s impact, Mrs. Nnene Bassey, Special Assistant to the Governor on Persons with Disabilities, said the initiatives have not only provided relief but also instilled a renewed sense of representation and empowerment among PWDs in Akwa Ibom State.

With these strides, stakeholders believe Governor Eno’s administration is charting a new course for disability inclusion in governance and service delivery, reinforcing the hope that, indeed, better days lie ahead.

Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria Opens Abuja Resource Centre

The Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN), a leading voice in advocacy and empowerment for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has taken a major step forward in its 24-year journey with the establishment of a new Resource Centre in Abuja. This marks the Foundation’s expansion beyond its Lagos and Ibadan centres, bringing vital services to children, young adults, and families across the Federal Capital Territory and northern Nigeria.

Speaking on the Foundation’s mission, National President and CEO, Mrs. Rose Mordi, stressed that DSFN’s vision extends beyond building centres.

“It is about creating an inclusive society where persons with Down syndrome are recognised for their abilities rather than their limitations,” she said.

“Down syndrome is not a disease, and it is not contagious. It is a condition. What these children and young people need most is belief—belief that they have potential, belief that they can learn, and belief that they can contribute meaningfully to society.”

Over the years, DSFN has provided advocacy, therapy, educational support, vocational training, and family counselling to unlock the hidden abilities of persons with Down syndrome. Creative tools such as music and storytelling have also played a transformative role, enabling self-expression and inspiring families and communities.

However, significant challenges remain, particularly in healthcare. Many children with Down syndrome are born with congenital heart defects requiring costly surgeries that run into millions of naira. While two Nigerian hospitals now offer such procedures, affordability remains a barrier for many families. To address this, DSFN has mobilised donations and partnerships, sometimes sponsoring children and parents for surgeries abroad.

“These children are our children. Their survival and future should be a collective responsibility,” the Executive Director noted, calling on government, corporate organisations, and the public to support the cause.

In Lagos, the Foundation has already secured subsidised health insurance through the State Health Scheme, covering students, parents, and staff. DSFN now plans to replicate this model in Abuja by partnering with local authorities to expand access to affordable healthcare.

The Abuja Centre, officially opened on September 10, 2025, is envisioned as a hub for specialised education, therapy, and advocacy, as well as a rallying point for families and stakeholders committed to advancing inclusion.

As DSFN looks to the future, its message is clear: Nigeria must build a society where persons with intellectual disabilities not only survive but thrive, live with dignity, and contribute to national development.

Group Advocates Rehabilitation Centre, Disability Agency for PWDs in Ogun

The Ogun State chapter of the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN) has called on the state government to establish a rehabilitation centre and a disability agency to address the growing needs of persons with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities.

The call was made during the commemoration of the 2025 World Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day, themed “Fall Prevention, Spinal Cord Protection.”

Chairman of SCIAN Ogun State, Ayo Awobona, emphasized the need for a standard rehabilitation facility to support survivors after hospital discharge, while also urging the government to fully implement the state’s disability law. He further stressed the creation of a disability-focused agency or bureau that will drive inclusion and welfare for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Speaking at the event, former Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State chapter, Dr. Kunle Alimi of the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, highlighted that most spinal cord injuries are preventable. He identified road crashes, overspeeding, reckless driving, and falls from slippery surfaces or heights as common causes.

The state government, through the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye—represented by the Director of Rehabilitation, Mrs. Funmilayo Olikama—reaffirmed its commitment to creating a more conducive environment and improving welfare for PWDs.

The event also featured donations of mobility aids and medical supplies by staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Abeokuta branch, and other supporters, bringing relief to many members of SCIAN.

Senate Deputy President Hails Disability Advocate’s Push for National Spinal Cord Injuries Policy

The Office of the Deputy President of the Senate has expressed appreciation to Engr. Abdul D. Haruna, a disability advocate and former Chairman of the Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Kano chapter, for his contributions to the development of a National Spinal Cord Injuries Policy.

In a letter signed by Mrs. Ngozi Nkemdirim, Special Adviser on Administration to the Deputy President of the Senate, the lawmaker conveyed gratitude to Haruna for his active participation in the Constitution Amendment Committee Public Hearing held in Kano.

The letter further noted that the memo submitted by Haruna during the public hearing would receive “favourable attention” in the drafting of final bills to be submitted to the Senate for consideration.

“The Deputy President of the Senate conveys his gratitude to you for your participation… your memo submitted at the hearing will receive favourable attention in the making of the final bills,” the statement read in part.

The Deputy President’s office also extended best wishes and recognition to Haruna for his continued advocacy in championing disability inclusion and pushing for policies that improve the welfare of persons living with spinal cord injuries in Nigeria.

The move marks another step in the Senate’s engagement with disability advocates as part of broader efforts to strengthen legal frameworks promoting inclusion and protection for persons with disabilities across the country.

Kwara Government Partners Initiative to Improve Lives of Persons with Cerebral Palsy

The Kwara State Government has pledged stronger support for persons with cerebral palsy and their families, assuring that no one will be left behind in its social development agenda.

Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nnafatima Imam, PhD, gave the assurance while receiving the Founder of the Ifeoluwa Cerebral Palsy Initiative, Mr. Ifeoluwa Oluwaseyi Anise, and his team during a courtesy visit.

According to her, the government’s support will focus on inclusion, awareness creation, and empowerment, stressing that empathy and sustained assistance are vital in easing the economic and emotional burdens of cerebral palsy.

She commended Mr. Anise for establishing the initiative and for designing programmes that directly touch the lives of persons with cerebral palsy, describing his efforts as a noble contribution to societal progress.

Mr. Anise, while speaking on the purpose of the visit, said the initiative sought collaboration with the Ministry and extended an official invitation to the state government for the forthcoming Cerebral Palsy Day celebration.

He revealed that the celebration would raise awareness, mobilize stakeholders, and feature empowerment opportunities for both caregivers and persons with cerebral palsy, equipping them with the skills and resources needed for independence and improved living standards.

He further lauded the state government for fostering an enabling environment for disability-focused initiatives to grow, noting that such support has been instrumental to the work of his foundation.

The visit concluded with the presentation of a recognition plaque to the Commissioner in appreciation of her role in championing inclusive policies and supporting social development initiatives in Kwara State.

Katsina PWDs urge Governor Radda to create Disability Commission, appoint commissioner

The community of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Katsina State has urged Governor Dikko Umar Radda to establish a Disability Commission and appoint a Commissioner for Disability Affairs, saying such measures would greatly ease their challenges and guarantee stronger representation in government.

The appeal was made by Sarkin Makarfin Katsina, Alhaji Garba Mahuta, during a press briefing addressed by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Disability Matters, Hudu Usman. Mahuta also took a moment to thank the Governor for personally funding his medical operation and treatment, describing it as a gesture that reflects genuine concern for the welfare of PWDs.

In his remarks, Usman highlighted the progress recorded by his office, noting that more than 750 PWDs across the Katsina, Daura, and Funtua zones have benefitted from empowerment initiatives, skill acquisition programmes, and vocational training. He emphasized that these efforts aim to improve livelihoods and promote self-reliance among PWDs.

Usman further assured that plans are underway to make public buildings, schools, and transportation systems more accessible, in line with global best practices. He also stressed the importance of awareness campaigns to promote disability rights, reduce stigma, and foster social inclusion.

He cited ongoing collaborations with government agencies and NGOs, including the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), which distributed food items to 300 PWDs, and Gwagware Foundation, which donated 100 bags of food, alongside interventions for 200 out-of-school children.

The SSA commended Governor Radda for his commitment to disability inclusion, pledging that his office would continue to champion the rights, empowerment, and protection of PWDs across the state.

Commission, Foundation Sign MoU to Boost Disability Inclusion

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has entered into a strategic partnership with The Ability Life Initiative (TALI) Foundation to advance disability inclusion and accelerate the implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Wednesday at the NCPWD headquarters in Abuja, with senior directors of the Commission in attendance. The TALI Foundation team was led by its Co-Founder, Barr. Prada Uzodimma.

Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, described the partnership as a “marriage of purpose,” noting that it goes beyond paperwork to concrete actions that will break barriers and open up opportunities for the over 35.5 million Nigerians with disabilities.

“Inclusion is not a favour; it is a fundamental human right. With partners like TALI Foundation, we are confident of faster and deeper implementation of the Disability Act across the country,” Gufwan stated.

Barr. Uzodimma, on her part, expressed gratitude to the Commission for its consistent support since TALI’s inception three years ago. She added that the Foundation’s programmes focus on accessible housing, transportation, healthcare, mental well-being, and advocacy, all of which align with the Disability Act.

Both organizations will immediately begin work on the First Lady’s Stakeholder Forum on Disability Inclusion scheduled for November 2025. The forum will bring together government agencies, development partners, and disability advocates to push for state-level enforcement of the Act.

The Commission pledged to provide technical support and policy guidance to ensure the partnership delivers measurable impact.

This collaboration signals a stronger synergy between government and civil society in advancing the vision of an inclusive Nigeria.

2027 Elections: Igbuzor Advocates Free, Fair Polls to Boost Inclusion of Women, Youths, PWDs

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, pro-democracy advocate and founding Executive Director of the Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), Dr. Otive Igbuzor, has called for free, fair, and violence-free elections as a foundation for greater political inclusion.

Speaking in Abuja during his 62nd birthday celebration and the public presentation of his latest book, Inclusive Governance and Development in Nigeria, Igbuzor stressed that transparent elections would create more space for women, youths, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to take active roles in politics and governance.

According to him, “If we have free, fair, credible, and violence-free elections, more women will participate. Secondly, we need deliberate policies for inclusion—quotas for women, youth, and PWDs. Thirdly, we need participatory democracy as an approach. With these three, inclusive governance will be possible.”

He further emphasized that inclusive governance is central to Nigeria’s development, noting that elections must not only produce leaders but also ensure equitable representation for marginalized groups.

Igbuzor urged professionals, religious leaders, and God-fearing individuals not to shy away from politics out of fear that it is a “dirty game.” He warned that such withdrawal only leaves the space for charlatans and opportunists. “Politics determines education, health, housing, food security, and even religion. If good people do not engage, governance will fall into the wrong hands,” he cautioned.

In a keynote lecture at the event, Dr. Stephen Iroro Izu of Nile University of Nigeria highlighted that exclusion of women, youths, and PWDs continues to undermine effective representation and decision-making. He warned that institutional, cultural, and patriarchal barriers must be addressed through deliberate and collaborative interventions to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.

Families Petition IGP Over Road Crash That Left Victims Amputated in Plateau

Families of three victims of a road accident in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, have petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure justice after a reckless driver left their relatives with life-altering injuries.

The victims — Isaac Dung, Nathan Bayei, and Chomo Dachung — were reportedly returning home after watching a football match on August 17 when the driver lost control, ramming into a building fence in the Rayfield community. The crash resulted in two amputations and paralysis in another case. The victims are currently receiving treatment at Potters Specialist Hospital, Jos.

During a peace walk on Tuesday, the families accused the driver’s guardian, Mr. Bulus Damul, of reneging on an earlier agreement to cover their medical expenses, estimated at over N8 million. They alleged that the driver, who was initially arrested, had been released due to his family’s influence.

One of the victims’ relatives, Jemimah Bayei, lamented the financial and emotional toll of the incident. Another, Mrs. Bridget Pam, appealed to authorities to intervene, describing the families’ situation as “an injustice.”

Mr. Damul, however, denied the allegations, saying he had already paid N2 million and only agreed to cover 80% of the bills. He claimed the families later demanded he set aside N30 million or risk paying N75 million, which he described as unfair.

ASP Raymond Sunday of the Anglo Police Division confirmed the incident was reported to their station and urged the families to remain patient as investigations continue.
