Jalingo, Nigeria — The community of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Taraba State has expressed deep appreciation to the Taraba State House of Assembly following the recent passage of the Taraba State Commission for Persons with Disabilities Bill into law.
In a statement signed by Comrade Wanderimam Teyang, the Special Assistant to the Executive Governor on Persons with Disabilities, the community lauded the Right Honourable Speaker and all members of the House for what they described as a “prompt and commendable” legislative action.
“This landmark legislative achievement has brought immense joy and renewed hope to our community,” the statement read. “It represents a major step forward in the recognition, protection, and advancement of the rights and dignity of Persons with Disabilities across the state.”
The statement also acknowledged the Honourable Commissioner for Social Justice and Reintegration for her unwavering support and persistent advocacy that helped ensure the bill’s successful passage.
As the bill now awaits executive assent, the PWDs community is urging Governor Agbu Kefas to sign it into law without delay. According to the group, the establishment of the Commission will be instrumental in advancing inclusive education and employment, promoting accessibility, driving social inclusion, and creating sustainable economic empowerment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
“We are confident that the Commission, once operational, will serve as a catalyst for meaningful change and improved quality of life for Persons with Disabilities in Taraba State,” Teyang noted.
The community also pledged its readiness to collaborate with the Commission in the implementation of inclusive and impactful programmes aimed at building a more equitable society.
