Speaker Pledges Support as Bauchi PWDs Demand Disability Rights Legislation

by Inclusive News Network

The Bauchi State community of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) has called on the State House of Assembly to enact a law establishing a Disability Commission to protect their rights and promote equal opportunities.

Led by Chairman Mahmud Abdullahi and Kabiru Garba Ningi, the delegation visited the Assembly to commend the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, and other lawmakers for their ongoing efforts in improving the lives of PWDs.

During the visit, the group submitted a proposed bill titled: “A Law to Establish the Bauchi State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, to Safeguard the Rights and Welfare of Persons with Disabilities, Prohibit All Forms of Discrimination Against Them, Promote Equality of Opportunity in All Aspects of Life and for Related Matters.” They urged the House to give the bill legislative priority.

In his response, Speaker Suleiman reaffirmed his commitment to inclusivity, stressing that disability does not equate to inability. He encouraged persons with disabilities to embrace self-belief and referenced the “Challenge Your Disability” initiative introduced by Hajiya Hauwa Abiodun Isah Yuguda, wife of the former Bauchi State Governor.

The Speaker assured the delegation that the Bauchi State House of Assembly would take necessary steps to pass the bill, following the example of other states across the country.
