Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has issued a service-wide circular mandating all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to comply with the National Accessibility Regulations.
This directive marks a significant step forward in ensuring inclusivity and equal access for persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
The circular, released on 22 May, 2024, mandated all MDAs to implement necessary measures to enhance accessibility, enabling persons with disabilities to access public services, facilities, and opportunities without barriers. This initiative underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities in a statement signed by Saleh Faruq Gagarawa, Head, New Media, called on all MDAs to fully comply with the SGF’s directive and work collaboratively to create an inclusive environment for persons with disabilities.
According to Gagarawa, “This compliance will be pivotal in dismantling barriers to accessibility and fostering a society where everyone, irrespective of their abilities, can thrive.
“We also encourage all stakeholders, including development partners and advocacy groups, to continue supporting these initiatives to ensure widespread awareness and implementation.”
