Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Niger State have appealed to former President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, to support the establishment of specialized skills acquisition centres aimed at improving the livelihoods of persons with disabilities across the state.
The appeal was made in a formal letter issued by the Executive Director, Muhammad Abubakar Enagi, on behalf of the disability community in Niger State, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions to promote empowerment, inclusion, and sustainable development for persons with disabilities.
According to the letter, the proposed IBB Disabilities Skills Acquisition Centres are intended to be established across the three senatorial zones of Niger State to provide structured opportunities for vocational and technical training, entrepreneurship development, digital literacy, and social rehabilitation.
The group noted that despite ongoing advocacy and support efforts, many persons with disabilities in the state continue to face significant barriers, including limited access to vocational training, employment opportunities, and social integration.
They expressed confidence in Babangida’s legacy of leadership and longstanding commitment to national development, describing his intervention as potentially transformative for vulnerable and underserved populations.
“The establishment of these centres will greatly empower persons with disabilities to become self-reliant, economically productive, and active contributors to the growth and development of society,” the statement read.
The organization further emphasized that the initiative would not only strengthen economic independence among persons with disabilities but also promote social inclusion and community participation across Niger State.
The group concluded by expressing appreciation for the former president’s continued service to humanity and appealed for his support in making the proposed centres a reality.
