Persons with dwarfism in Kano State have taken a historic step toward self-advocacy and inclusion with the establishment of the Kano State Association of People with Dwarfism, the first organisation of its kind in the state.
The association emerged from a two-day capacity-building workshop organised by the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), which focused on Disability Rights and the use of digital tools to counter harmful narratives about persons with disabilities. The training aimed at equipping participants with practical skills to challenge stereotypes, promote positive self-representation, and advocate for disability inclusion both online and offline.
As a major outcome of the workshop, participants agreed to formally organise themselves to strengthen collective advocacy and engagement with stakeholders. Consequently, a Caretaker Committee was inaugurated to pilot the affairs of the newly formed association. The committee comprises Maryam Isa as Chairperson, Rukayya Salisu as Secretary, Khadija Siraj as Public Relations Officer, and Sani Haruna as Treasurer.
Speaking at the event, the newly appointed Chairperson, Maryam Isa, expressed appreciation to CITAD for its support and commitment to empowering persons with dwarfism. She described the initiative as a turning point for the community, noting that the association would provide a unified platform to promote their rights, dignity, and full participation in society.
The workshop and formation of the association underscore CITAD’s ongoing efforts to advance disability inclusion and amplify the voices of marginalised groups across Kano State.
