The Founder of Omega Power Ministries, Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, has issued a public apology to women following widespread criticism over a viral video in which he sought a wife for an autistic man under his care.
The video, shared on the pastor’s Facebook page on Friday, drew strong reactions from members of the public, with many describing the proposal as inappropriate and potentially degrading to women.
In the now-controversial post, Chinyere offered accommodation, a salary, and other benefits to any woman willing to marry the man, prompting concerns about the transactional nature of the arrangement and the welfare of the individual involved.
Responding to the backlash, the cleric expressed regret over how his comments were perceived, stressing that he had no intention of disrespecting women.
“I want to apologise to all the ladies who watched the video. I can never degrade any woman. If my comments were seen as degrading, I apologise openly. I am very, very sorry,” he said.
Chinyere explained that his primary intention was to secure long-term care and companionship for the man, who has special needs and was reportedly abandoned as a child.
According to him, the man requires constant supervision and assistance with daily living activities, including feeding, bathing, and personal hygiene.
“He cannot perform basic tasks on his own. He does not speak and requires full-time care. I am always concerned about his safety and wellbeing,” he said.
The pastor further revealed that the young man was previously taken to a foster home by the police but was rejected due to his condition, after which he assumed responsibility for his care.
“I have more than 500 children who have been left at my gate over the years. Some of them have disabilities, including autism. I cannot abandon them, and this young man is no exception,” he added.
Chinyere also highlighted the social support services provided by his ministry, including free education, healthcare, and accommodation for vulnerable children and persons with disabilities.
He maintained that the intention behind the post was to improve the man’s quality of life and draw public attention to the need for sustained care and support for persons with special needs, while acknowledging that the approach may have been misunderstood.
“Making it public was meant to help people understand the situation and offer support,” he said.
