- The Ogun State Parliament passes a disability bill, the first of its kind.
- The bill was unanimously supported by majority of Ogun State lawmaker to provide an enabling disability-friendly environment for the PWDs in the Gateway State
- The Bill is aimed at ending discrimination, economic and political inequalities against the disabled in the state.
- The incumbent governor of the state, Gov. Ibikunle Amosun is expected to heartily sign the bill into law “fairly soon”
In a historical event- the first of its kind in the legislative history of Ogun State, the Ogun State House of Assembly has unanimously signed into law a disability bill. Bill-numbered 012/OG/2017, the law is purposed to ensure full equality and opportunities for people with disabilities in the state.
Passed by the Speaker, Honourable Surajudeen Ishola Adekumbi, and cosponsored by Hons Ojuri Olabowale and Otukoya Olujimi, the bill has garnered unanimity, and the state governor is expected to assent to the bill in a short while.
While congratulating everyone that’s involved in this incredible effort, Comrade Lekan Mohammed, JONAPWD chairman, Ogun State, adds that Ogun State lawmakers have demonstrated a sense of humanity and empathy for the less privileged.
“This is the attitude and accountability that we need from the government-creating an enabling environment for every citizen, including the minorities, the voiceless, the unheard, and the ones with limited opportunities and resources.” He remarked.
