NYFF Project Boosts ICT Access, Inclusive Learning for Deaf Students in Uyo

An inclusive education initiative led by Kelvin Okiemute, a Nigeria Youth Future Fund (NYFF) Project Lead, has significantly improved access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) learning for Deaf students at the Special Education Centre (School for Inclusive Learning), Mbiabong Etoi, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

A mid-term implementation of the project, titled “Fostering Inclusive Education for Deaf Students through Awareness and ICT Integration,” was designed to address the digital inclusion gap faced by Deaf learners. During the mid-term implementation phase, it was discovered that although the school had functional computers, Deaf students were often excluded from ICT practical sessions. To bridge this gap, the project team organized structured ICT training sessions tailored specifically to the learning needs of Deaf students, ensuring their full participation.

A professional ICT trainer was engaged to teach students essential computer skills, while also highlighting how digital knowledge can enhance academic development, improve employability, and provide access to global opportunities through online platforms. The intervention enabled Deaf students to build confidence and acquire practical digital competencies critical for their educational and career advancement.

In addition, teachers underwent capacity-building sessions focused on inclusive teaching strategies, sign language support, and the effective integration of ICT tools into classroom instruction. This holistic approach aimed to strengthen learning outcomes while promoting sustained inclusion beyond the project timeline.

The mid-term engagement identified the need for expanded ICT access, structured curriculum integration, and greater parental involvement in the next phase of implementation. Planned components, such as the procurement of additional ICT tools and parent-focused workshops, are scheduled for the subsequent phase.

Public awareness campaigns also formed a core component of the initiative. Through poster displays and a community road walk, the project team sensitized the public on the importance of inclusive education and worked to reduce stigma and discrimination against Deaf students.

Despite challenges such as inconsistent electricity supply and delays in administrative approvals, the project achieved notable institutional recognition. The school principal and the Honourable Commissioner for Education commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful, while encouraging sustained ICT support for the institution.

The project remains ongoing and aims to strengthen inclusive access to digital education for Deaf learners in line with national disability rights frameworks.

The initiative aligns with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which guarantees equal access to quality education and prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the project will serve as a model for inclusive education interventions across the country, particularly in expanding digital access and learning opportunities for Deaf students.
