The Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission (NSDRC), Saleh Barde Keana, is celebrating two years in office, marked by significant strides in advancing the rights and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
The commission, established to promote, protect, and prioritize the welfare of PWDs, has continued to expand access to education, healthcare, employment, and other socio-economic opportunities. Mr. Barde-Keana, who was sworn in by Abdullahi Sule in March 2024, has also led efforts to implement the National Disability Act, including advocating for the 5 percent employment quota in public institutions.
Within the period under review, the commission intensified advocacy and awareness campaigns, engaging ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure inclusive policies. It also facilitated monthly financial support for PWD associations and introduced empowerment initiatives focused on skills development and economic inclusion.
In addition, the NSDRC has promoted free education for PWDs and pushed for improved accessibility in public buildings and infrastructure. These efforts have earned Mr. Barde-Keana recognition for his contributions to disability rights, as he continues to emphasize inclusive education and equal opportunities for all.
