The Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive steps in enforcing Nigeria’s disability laws nationwide to ensure the dignity, healthcare, and inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities.
The Foundation made the appeal on Saturday during the 24th edition of its annual October campaign, themed “Health Care Support for All.” The event featured an advocacy and charity walk that concluded at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat, co-sponsored by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and The 7 Fifteen Philanthropic Foundation.
In a statement issued at the event, DSFN said it was driven by the plight of people with intellectual disabilities who remain among the most marginalised in the healthcare system.
“When we talk about disability, there are disabilities, and there are disabilities. Some individuals can speak up for their rights, while others cannot, and it is for them that we raise our voices,” the statement read.
The group criticised the gaps in inclusive healthcare services, warning that the neglect of persons with intellectual disabilities often results in preventable health issues and reduced life expectancy.
Reiterating its commitment to empowerment, DSFN highlighted its work in inclusive education and vocational training at its Lagos centre, where participants acquire skills in baking, barbing, hairdressing, leatherwork, and arts — with plans to launch a fish farming project soon.
“These programmes are designed to promote independence and self-reliance. We ask why the federal government cannot enforce existing disability laws to guarantee integration, dignity, and equal opportunities,” the Foundation said.
The Foundation maintained that fully implementing disability-inclusive policies would be a milestone achievement for the Tinubu administration, signalling progress toward a Nigeria where everyone — regardless of ability — can access quality healthcare, education, and dignity.
The charity walk drew participation from other advocacy groups such as Pacelli, Punuka Foundation, OCD Foundation, Lady Atinuke, Association of the Physically Challenged, Lion Ability Foundation, Modupe Cole, and Victoria Foundation.
The call aligns with findings from an August 2025 Agora Policy report, which revealed that only 19 of Nigeria’s 36 states have adopted the Disability Act, leaving millions without legal protection in 17 states.
