Nigeria has taken a significant step toward inclusive development with the unveiling of the country’s first accessibility-adapted vehicle, aimed at improving mobility and economic participation for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The groundbreaking initiative, led by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Abba Mohammed Isa, is a strategic collaboration between his office, Elizade Autoland, and JAC Motors. The unveiling ceremony featured the presentation and live demonstration of a specially modified JAC J7 saloon car, designed to meet accessibility standards and enable independent use by qualified PWDs.
Isa disclosed that the adapted vehicle would be formally presented to Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, noting that the project evolved from strategic discussions initiated in July 2025. He described the vehicle as a symbol of access, dignity, and opportunity, stressing that limited mobility remains one of the biggest barriers confronting PWDs in Nigeria.
To ensure nationwide impact, the presidential aide revealed plans for bulk procurement and distribution of the adapted vehicles across all 774 local government areas through recognized Organizations of Persons with Disabilities. Beneficiaries will also be integrated into e-hailing platforms such as Uber and Bolt, providing sustainable income opportunities and promoting economic self-reliance.
The initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes inclusive economic growth, social equity, and equal opportunity. According to Isa, enabling PWDs to participate in the e-hailing sector will help reduce poverty, foster social inclusion, and boost national productivity, reinforcing the principle that disability does not equate to inability.
The ceremony concluded with a symbolic handover and live demonstration of the vehicle’s accessibility features, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s drive toward inclusive mobility and economic empowerment for all citizens.
