A renewed sense of optimism filled the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction on Tuesday as Dr. Bernard Doro officially took over leadership of the ministry. His appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks a new chapter, making him the fourth minister to steer the ministry since its creation.
Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Naomi Doro, and well-wishers, Doro walked into a warm reception led by the Minister of State, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, and the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Yakubu Kofarmata. Staff lined up to welcome him, reflecting the high expectations placed on his shoulders.
Speaking during his inaugural address to directors and agency heads, Doro unveiled a compelling vision—one centered on lifting millions of Nigerians out of multidimensional poverty. He vowed to work in alignment with President Tinubu’s mission of “making hope a reality” for ordinary citizens.
“There will be a bit of adjustment for me after living in the UK for more than 20 years,” he admitted with a smile. “But with your support and expertise, and my readiness to learn, we will elevate this ministry to unprecedented heights.”
Doro noted that the expectations surrounding his new role were remarkably high, yet he expressed confidence that, with teamwork, the ministry could surpass them.
“This country has over 60 percent of its population living in multidimensional poverty,” he said. “We must change this narrative. Our job is to ensure social mobility, to help families move from vulnerability to stability. And we can achieve this through collaboration, accountability, and a selfless commitment to service.”
The minister also underscored the importance of trust within teams, describing it as the bedrock of effective humanitarian response.
“It already feels like home here,” he told the staff. “A team is not just people who work together; it is people who trust one another. That trust will help us achieve our objectives.”
Reflecting on the legacy of his predecessor, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, now APC National Chairman, Doro said stepping into such large shoes was daunting but achievable.
“With the experienced hands in this ministry, I know I will not just step into the shoes—I will walk in them comfortably,” he said, drawing applause.
