Ogun State, Nigeria – In a groundbreaking move towards educational inclusivity, the New Era Initiative for Persons with Disabilities has successfully awarded the first cohort of its WAEC scholarship program. On Friday, 26th February, 2025, the organization paid the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) fees for six outstanding students with disabilities in senior secondary schools across Ogun State, Nigeria.
This initiative underscores the organization’s commitment to fostering fairness, equal access to education, and empowerment for students with disabilities.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Mr. Adekunle Adeyinka, Chairman of the Organization, emphasized the initiative’s commitment to fairness and accessibility in line with Nigeria’s Disability Law and international conventions. He noted that the selection process was highly competitive, with numerous applications received. However, based on academic commitment and potential, six students—four males and two females—were chosen from across various disability clusters.
Empowering the Next Generation
Delivering her remarks, the organization’s Public Relations Officer, Miss Tominsin Olatayo, a Mandela Washington Fellowship awardee, urged the scholarship recipients to strive for excellence and not be limited by their disabilities. She reassured them that the organization’s support extends beyond exam fees, stating:
“We are committed to fostering a robust network where these students will receive ongoing mentorship and guidance, helping them navigate both academic and life challenges. The importance of mentorship for young persons with disabilities cannot be overstated. They need role models, guidance, and a supportive hand to hold.”
The six scholarship recipients include:
- Master Kafiru Faruk (deaf, Sagamu) – Aspires to study Arts at Oyo Special School
- Master Razaq Ayomide Hassan (deaf, Sagamu) – Aspires to study Arts at the University of Lagos
- Miss Jadesola Onapitan (physically disabled) – Aspires to study Law at the University of Lagos
- Master Olamide Idris (visually impaired, Ijebu Ode) – Aspires to study Law at the University of Lagos
- Master Franklyn Udoh (visually impaired) – Aspires to study Law at the University of Lagos
- Miss Mary Kuponiyi (deaf, Abeokuta) – Aspires to study Business Education at the University of Lagos.
A Celebration of Progress
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to the scholarship recipients by the executives of New Era Initiative for Persons with Disabilities, followed by the provision of transportation support to their parents and guardians and light refreshment. Overcome with emotion, Mr. Kuponiyi, father of one of the awardees, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of all the beneficiaries, stating that the initiative marks a significant step in fostering solidarity within the disability community.
Dignitaries at the event included Mr. Olusola Ayangbola (Vice President of the Organization), Ms. Oluwatoyin Laose (Women Leader), Mr. Olatunji Alabede (Secretary), and other distinguished guests.
This initiative represents a milestone in the journey towards inclusive education, ensuring that students with disabilities are empowered to pursue their dreams without financial constraints. The New Era Initiative continues to champion opportunities for these students, setting a precedent for future advocacy and support.
