NCPWD Receives Four-Year Disability Inclusion Report, Vows Action to Enhance Lives of PwDs

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Gufwan, has received a detailed four-year report from the Disability Civil Rights Movement and Policy Changers, assessing the level of disability inclusion in Nigerian government policies.

The report, which was presented in Abuja, outlines key achievements and ongoing challenges in the disability sector, particularly in light of the 2018 passage of the Disability Act.

The document reflects the collective efforts of disability advocacy groups working toward improved legal and social recognition for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). In addition to highlighting past successes, the report presents recommendations aimed at advancing the living standards and overall welfare of PwDs in Nigeria.

Chief Gufwan, while addressing the press, assured the public that the report would be reviewed thoroughly, and concrete steps would be taken to improve the lives of the 35.5 million Nigerians living with disabilities. “We are committed to doing what is necessary to push the disability agenda forward in Nigeria,” he stated.

He further noted the link between the rising cases of ill-health and disabilities in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of planning for the country’s growing population, which is expected to exceed 250 million within the next decade.

Dr. Job Napoleon Agbor, the Convener of the Nigeria National and International Disability Civil Rights Movement, praised Chief Gufwan’s leadership, commending his open-door policy and dedication to the cause. “It is an honor to present the findings of this report to you, as we look forward to better administration in the years ahead,” Dr. Agbor remarked.

However, he emphasized that much work remains to fulfill the aspirations of Nigeria’s 35.5 million PwDs. Dr. Agbor concluded by urging the federal government to increase the Commission’s budget, to address the rising needs of the disability community in Nigeria.
