In celebration of Children’s Day 2024, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities held a special event at its headquarters in Asokoro, Abuja, honoring children with disabilities. This year’s theme, “For Every Child, Every Right,” underscores the commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of ability, have equal opportunities and rights.
Executive Secretary, Dr. James David Lalu, PhD, npom, welcomed students from the FCT School of the Blind Jabi and the FCT School of the Deaf Kuje, along with their accompanying staff. The headquarters was adorned with colorful balloons, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for the children.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Lalu stated, “Today is a beautiful day to celebrate children with disabilities. While every day is their day, today is special. It brings me immense joy to see you all here, and I look forward to the day when some of you will become the Executive Secretary of this Commission. Your potential is boundless.”
Dr. Lalu also emphasized the Commission’s dedication to eradicating discrimination against children with disabilities. He made a powerful call to action, urging parents, community leaders, and government bodies to support this mission.
“We must make discrimination a thing of the past in Nigeria. I call on the FCT Minister to prioritize the schools for children with disabilities and on the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to ensure all necessary resources are provided to enhance the learning capabilities of these children. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment.”
Dr. Lalu expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support of the Commission and his efforts to foster inclusion within his administration. “With continued support and commitment, I am confident that by the time you grow up, Nigeria will have transformed into a disability-friendly country.”
A highlight of the event was the heartfelt appreciation expressed by Aishaa, a student from the School of the Blind, who said, “This celebration has made us feel loved and worthy. Thank you for always remembering us.”
The celebration concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, symbolizing unity and joy. Dr. Lalu then took the children on a tour of his office, explaining the significance of the policies and regulations initiated there to improve the lives of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities remains committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of all children with disabilities, ensuring they receive the support and recognition they deserve.
