The President, Network For Disabled Women, NDW, Lois Auta-Udonkanta has urged the United Nations Women to set aside a day as International Day for Women and Girls with Disabilities.
Auta gave the recommendation in an interview with Inclusive News Network.
According to her, “celebrating an International Day for Women is going to be a very big deal for Women and Girls with Disability. I want to recommend that the U.N Women consider setting aside a day for celebrating Women and Girls with Disabilities.”
“We have Women’s Day, Fathers Day, Children’s Day, Youth Day and so on, but there’s no Women with Disabilities Day. This is something we should begin to think about, act on and make happen.”
Lois-Auta believes if implemented, the day will encourage women with disabilities to seek collaborations, partnerships, to work together and share ideas. Such special day will also spur them to break bias, break barriers, change the status-quo, and advance changes that favour Women and Girls with Disabilities.
