LASODA Empowers 100 Elderly Persons with Disabilities in Lagos

by Inclusive News Network

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), has empowered about 100 elderly persons with disabilities, as well as elderly caregivers of children with disabilities, across the state.

The annual support programme, tagged “Cash Support and Medical Outreach to Elderly Persons with Disabilities and Elderly Caregivers,” is part of LASODA’s mandate and aligns with the vision of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to ensure that no resident is left behind.

The initiative featured the disbursement of cash support alongside the provision of medical services to beneficiaries drawn from different parts of Lagos State.

Speaking at the event, held at the LASODA premises, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the intervention reflects the Lagos State Government’s commitment to promoting inclusion, dignity, and social protection for vulnerable groups.
According to her, LASODA has, over the years, implemented several impactful programmes aimed at enhancing the independence, dignity, and community participation of persons with disabilities.

“At LASODA, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. Our goal is to create a Lagos where every resident, including senior citizens with disabilities, can participate fully and meaningfully in society,” Oyetunde-Lawal said.

She explained that the financial support provided to the beneficiaries is designed to help them meet personal needs, access healthcare services, improve mobility, and, in some cases, support small livelihood activities.

“The objective is simple yet powerful: to empower, not merely to give,” she added.
The LASODA boss also acknowledged the concerns of many parents over the future care of their children with disabilities, reassuring them of the government’s continued support while encouraging them to remain hopeful and engaged with relevant stakeholders.

“LASODA remains resolute in its commitment to protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and ensuring their full integration into society. We will continue to advocate for and implement initiatives that enable everyone to live fulfilling, productive, and dignified lives,” she stated.

Some of the beneficiaries, filled with joy and gratitude, expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government and LASODA for the timely intervention, describing it as a significant relief during the festive season.
