The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusivity in healthcare by ensuring equitable access to family planning services for persons with disabilities across Lagos State.
This commitment was highlighted during a sensitization programme organized by LASODA on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat. Themed “Ensuring Equitable Family Planning Access for People with Disabilities in Lagos State,” the event brought together representatives of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), distinguished guests, and participants from various homes and disability organizations.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, who was ably represented by the Director of the Medical Rehabilitation, Mobility Aids and Appliances (MRMA&A) Department, Mrs. Olukanni-Abokhai E.O, noted that the programme reflects the inclusive agenda of the present administration. She emphasized that no one should be left behind in accessing quality healthcare services in Lagos State.
According to her, the Lagos State Government, through LASODA, remains resolute in making family planning services accessible and beneficial to persons with disabilities. “Our goal is to empower persons with disabilities to make informed and healthy decisions concerning family planning, while also promoting their moral and emotional well-being,” she stated.
The sensitization session featured insightful lectures by health and social service experts. Nurse Adekunle Ruth, a medical practitioner, spoke on “The Basics and Importance of Family Planning,” highlighting modern family planning methods and their role in reducing maternal and child mortality.
Also speaking, Ms. Yetunde Odekunle of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) addressed the connection between family planning, domestic violence, and sexual health. She stressed the need for safe and informed choices within families to promote healthy relationships and well-being.
Participants expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for continually prioritizing the health and welfare of persons with disabilities. Mrs. Clementina Olufunmilayo Kolapo of the SAFREL Speech and Language Development Centre commended the state’s sustained commitment to disability inclusion. “Since moving to Lagos, I’ve witnessed tremendous progress in disability-focused initiatives. I commend the government for extending such impactful programmes to our community,” she remarked.
The event concluded with renewed calls for parents and caregivers to embrace family planning as an essential tool for healthy living and improved quality of life among all families, including those with disabilities.
