The General Manager of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, has commended the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) for its swift responsiveness and sustained interventions in promoting inclusive transportation services for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across Lagos State.
Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to LAMATA’s headquarters in Ojota, Lagos, on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The visit was aimed at assessing compliance with accessibility standards, an initiative jointly championed by LASODA, the Festus Fajemilo Foundation, and the Down Syndrome Foundation.
While applauding LAMATA for the accessibility features installed in its buses and rail systems, she emphasized the need for the establishment of dedicated Disability Support Offices at major transport hubs. According to her, such offices would provide designated spaces where PWDs can lodge complaints, seek directions, and receive timely assistance while navigating the transport system.
She further expressed LASODA’s readiness to collaborate with LAMATA in translating information displayed and scrolled on trains and buses into sign language, noting that the move would significantly enhance communication access for deaf and hard-of-hearing commuters.
In her response, the Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and inclusive transport services that guarantee high customer satisfaction for all commuters, irrespective of disability.
Speaking on accessibility across LAMATA’s operations, she disclosed that the Blue Line rail system is fully accessible to persons with diverse forms of disabilities, adding that continuous improvements are being made to ensure universal access.
She also urged PWDs to promptly report any form of abuse, harassment, or discrimination to uniformed LAMATA officials whenever their rights are violated while using the agency’s transportation services.
