Lagos Assembly passes Bill to combat COVID-19

The bill, which has 25 sections in all, is titled, “A Bill for a Law to Combat and Stop the Spread of Corona Virus Pandemic in Lagos State and for Connected Purposes.”

The lawmakers, before embarking on a two-hour recess on Thursday, had taken the first and second readings of the bill, after which they committed it to the Committee on Health Services of the House for further work and deliberations.

The law empowers the governor to spend as much as 20 billion naira to fight the pandemic while giving him the power to declare emergency in the state for up to three months.

It also establishes a Coronavirus Pandemic Trust Fund where good-natured Nigerians and corporate organisations can make donations towards the fight.

The law also makes it an offense for any person to move about during a lockdown except those on essential duties , those who failed to report the incidence of the disease would be penalised.

After passing the bill into law, the Speaker, Alhaji Mudashiru Obasa, directed the Clerk of the House, Mr. Azeez Sanni, to prepare and send a clean copy of the bill to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his assent.
