The First Lady of Kogi State, Hajiya Sefinat Usman Ododo, through the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative, has empowered hundreds of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and elderly women across the state as part of efforts to promote social inclusion and economic independence.
The initiative distributed mobility aids to over 800 persons with disabilities, including wheelchairs, white canes for the visually impaired, elbow crutches and armpit crutches. Beneficiaries also received cash support of ₦50,000 each, while 50 persons living with albinism were provided with sun protection creams.
In addition to assistive devices, the programme provided financial empowerment to 250 persons with disabilities and 100 elderly women, with each beneficiary receiving ₦200,000. The empowerment exercise covered all local government areas of Kogi State and extended to the ward level to ensure equitable reach.
The Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Office for Disability Affairs, Hon. Yakubu Nazir Abdulhakeem, commended the First Lady and Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for prioritising the welfare of vulnerable groups, describing the intervention as a landmark in advancing dignity, equity and disability inclusion in the state.
