The Chairman of Koko-Besse Local Government Area, Hon. Sirajo Usman Dan Gwaggo, on Monday distributed wheelchairs and cash assistance to 75 persons living with disabilities as part of efforts to promote inclusion and economic self-reliance.
The empowerment programme, held at the council secretariat, was carried out in partnership with Jos-based NGO, Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre. Beneficiaries were drawn from all 12 wards of the local government area.
Speaking during the presentation, Gwaggo said the initiative was aimed at restoring hope and strengthening the sense of belonging among persons with disabilities. He stressed that governance must be inclusive and responsive to the needs of all citizens. “This support is to ensure you are not left behind. Government belongs to everyone, including persons living with disabilities,” he said.
In addition to the wheelchairs, each beneficiary received ₦5,000 to support small-scale businesses and other income-generating activities. The chairman urged recipients to use the items and funds responsibly to improve their living conditions, reaffirming the council’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups.
In her remarks, the NGO’s Director of Media, Sandra Yilgwan, praised the council chairman for what she described as a compassionate and impactful intervention. She noted that the organisation remains open to collaboration with government bodies, philanthropists and other stakeholders to expand support for vulnerable communities.
Yilgwan added that the long-term success of the initiative would depend largely on how effectively beneficiaries utilise the assistance provided. The programme underscores increasing collaboration between local authorities and non-governmental organisations to address the needs of persons with disabilities in Kebbi State.
