For the second day running, Kano recorded the highest COVID-19 cases in Nigeria’s daily toll.
Out of Thursday’s 196 cases, Kano had 80 while on Friday, Kano had 92 of the 232 cases confirmed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
As of Friday, Kano had 232 cases, bringing the state’s total to 311. The state recorded its index case on April 11, 2020 and four days after, confirmed its first COVID-19 fatality.
Two weeks later, an unusual number of corpses began to pile up in the state, and although Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of the state, initially denied that the deaths were a cause for worry, the state eventually confirmed the increase in the number of fatalities, but attributed them to underlying illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and malaria.
Following the development, President Muhammadu Buhari declared a total lockdown in the state, which took effect on Monday.
Aside a federal delegation of specialists deployed to the state to investigate the situation, the state also said verbal autopsy would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the deaths.
None of Kano’s confirmed cases had been discharged as at May 1, 2020.
