For many persons with disabilities in rural Nigeria, mobility aids are more than just equipment — they are a ticket to independence, dignity, and the chance to dream bigger. That hope became a reality for 60 beneficiaries in Kafanchan, Jema’a LGA, Kaduna State, as the Songs of Joy Foundation distributed tricycle wheelchairs in partnership with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) and Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre.
Speaking at the event on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, NCPWD Executive Secretary, Mr. Ayuba Gufwan, reaffirmed the Commission’s mission to ensure that every PWD in Nigeria has access to the tools they need to overcome daily barriers. “Mobility aids are not just devices; they are lifelines that open doors to education, skill-building, business opportunities, and contributions to our national economy,” he said.
For Mrs. Maryam Shadrach Michael, CEO of the Songs of Joy Foundation, the initiative reflects the Foundation’s core mission — restoring dignity and enabling movement for those who need it most. She thanked partners and supporters, encouraging beneficiaries to turn their new wheelchairs into stepping stones for groundbreaking achievements.
Ms. Sandra Nanbam, Media and Program Director at Beautiful Gate Centre, highlighted the organisation’s impact, having distributed over 40,000 wheelchairs across Nigeria and three other African nations in the last 20 years. Local disability leaders, including Mr. Habila Anthony and Mr. Yohanna Ishaku Dangana, hailed the effort as a life-changing intervention, urging more targeted support for the blind, deaf, and physically challenged in grassroots communities.
For beneficiaries like Phoebe Jonathan and Habiba Abdulkareem, the day marked a turning point. They expressed deep appreciation to the organisers for remembering rural PWDs and helping to ease their daily mobility struggles.
The event stood as a testament to the transformative power of partnership, proving that when organisations and communities unite, they can break barriers and open new paths to inclusion for persons with disabilities.
