The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, has joined the global community in commemorating World Autism Awareness Day, calling for greater inclusion, acceptance, and support for individuals living with autism.
World Autism Awareness Day is dedicated to raising awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), promoting acceptance, and advocating sustained support and inclusion for persons with autism across all sectors of society.
Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a neurological condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour. Experts note that with early diagnosis and appropriate intervention, individuals with autism can lead fulfilling lives, contribute meaningfully to society, and reach their full potential.
The theme for the 2026 commemoration, “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value,” focuses on promoting neurodiversity, dignity, and inclusive access to education, employment, and healthcare. The theme underscores the dignity and worth of every autistic person, emphasizes inclusion as a shared responsibility, and affirms that every life—regardless of neurological differences—has equal value.
The initiative also highlights the urgent need to combat stigma, expand public awareness, and strengthen support systems for autistic individuals and their families, with many organisations around the world promoting Autism Acceptance throughout the month of April.
Speaking on the significance of the day, Gufwan stressed the importance of creating accessible opportunities that empower persons with disabilities, particularly individuals living with autism.
“We recognise the importance of providing accessible education, employment opportunities, healthcare, and social support to empower persons with disabilities, especially individuals with autism,” he said.
He further urged stakeholders, organisations, and communities to work collaboratively to build a more inclusive society by promoting autism-friendly environments, providing necessary resources and support for individuals with autism and their families, fostering inclusive education and employment opportunities, and encouraging greater acceptance and understanding of autism.
The Executive Secretary reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to advancing policies and initiatives that promote diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
