The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has lauded the Federal University, Lafia, for its outstanding commitment to inclusive education and the empowerment of students with disabilities.
Gufwan described the university’s progressive policies as a remarkable example of disability inclusion in higher education, noting that these efforts will inspire more students with disabilities to pursue and achieve academic excellence.
He commended the Vice Chancellor and management for introducing a 75 percent subsidy on tuition and other charges, which has eased financial barriers and made education more accessible for students with disabilities. He also praised the institution for reserving two percent of its admissions for candidates with special needs, a policy he said demonstrates true leadership in promoting equity and fairness.
The establishment of a Center for Disability Studies was also highlighted as a visionary move that will advance research, training, and advocacy for inclusion across Nigeria. In addition, Gufwan noted the allocation of accessible hostel spaces for students with disabilities, ensuring their safety, dignity, and comfort on campus. The university’s regular engagement with students with special needs, which guarantees their voices are heard and considered in planning, was equally commended.
According to Gufwan, these initiatives align with the Revised National Policy on Inclusive Education (2024) and contribute to national goals on social inclusion and poverty reduction. He expressed the Commission’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the Federal University, Lafia, in advancing inclusive education and creating sustainable opportunities for persons with disabilities. He also called on the Vice Chancellor to champion similar initiatives across other universities in the country.
