The Tech Inclusive for Deaf Initiative (TIDI) has organized a transformative Tech Career Path and Mentorship Program at the Special Education Centre in Yelwa, Bauchi State, aimed at empowering Deaf students through digital skills and career guidance.
Held in the school’s ICT room on Thursday, the event brought together over 30 Deaf students and a team of volunteers for a day filled with learning, mentorship, and inspiration.
In her welcome remarks, the Principal of the Special Education Centre, Jamila Gaba Muhammad, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the initiative. She was particularly impressed that the program was led by Deaf professionals and tailored specifically to the needs of Deaf youths. She praised the seamless communication between facilitators and students, urging that such initiatives be sustained in Deaf schools across the country.
The program featured sessions from prominent Deaf professionals who served as facilitators and mentors. Ashiru Abubakar, National Youth Leader of the Nigerian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD) and TIDI’s North-East Program Manager, opened with an introduction to TIDI and a session titled “After School, What Next?”
Umamatu Jiddah, a Deaf professional working with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, led a compelling session on “Why Deaf Women in Tech Matter,” emphasizing the importance of representation and inclusion in the tech space.
Also featured was Dayyabu Tanimu, a Deaf social media content creator, who shared insights on content creation, its relevance after school, and how young people can monetize digital platforms.
Delivering a goodwill message, Ismail Abdullahi, National PRO of NNAD, described the initiative as “incredible” and a bold step toward equipping Deaf youths with the tools for creativity and economic self-reliance.
The school management extended special thanks to TIDI’s Executive Director, Comr. Abubakar El-Mumbu Idris, NYL Ashiru Abubakar, and the entire TIDI team for their dedication to empowering the Deaf community.
