As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to observe this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has stressed the need for all to work hand in hand to eliminate discrimination, enhance accessibility, and empower individuals with disabilities to fully participate in all aspects of life.
The International Day for Persons with Disabilities is observed globally on December 3rd each year.
It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development and to increase awareness of the challenges they face.
The day also seeks to highlight the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible world for all.
According to a statement signed by Florence Austin, the Interim head for CCD, this year’s celebration with the theme; “United in Action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities.” emphasises the collective effort required to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
“The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a blueprint for a more sustainable and equitable future. This year’s theme underscores the pivotal role persons with disabilities play in realizing these goals. By fostering unity and collaboration, we aim to break down barriers, promote accessibility, and create an environment where everyone can actively contribute to building a better world.
“As we celebrate diversity, we recognize the unique strengths and perspectives that persons with disabilities bring to our communities.”
Austin noted that series of events, discussions, and initiatives that will highlight the importance of inclusivity and showcase successful endeavors that exemplify the theme has been lined up for the day.
“From advocating for policy changes to implementing accessible technologies, the International Day for Persons with Disabilities serves as a platform to amplify the voices of those who have often been marginalized.”
CCD thereby called on everyone to join the train in promoting a world where every person regardless of ability can thrive.
“By standing united in action, we can truly rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities,” she said.
