Benue State has recorded a major milestone in inclusive governance as Governor Hyacinth Alia, on Friday, August 29, 2025, signed into law the Persons with Disabilities Rights Commission Bill.
The new legislation establishes the Benue State Disability Rights Commission, a statutory body mandated to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, promote accessibility, and foster their full participation in society. With over 15 percent of the state’s population living with disabilities, the law is expected to transform policy into tangible protection and inclusion.
In a statement signed on Monday, Hope Alive for Possibilities Initiative (HAPI) commended Governor Alia for his leadership in ensuring the passage of the law, while the Benue State House of Assembly, the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), civil society groups, and advocates were recognized for their sustained efforts.
The Disability Rights Fund (DRF) also received special acknowledgment for its strategic support in amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities during the advocacy process.
Stakeholders say the assent to the law marks the beginning of a new chapter and have urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to move swiftly towards effective implementation.
