Benue State has recorded a major milestone in disability inclusion as Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia has signed the Disability Rights Act into law.
The new legislation, which was initiated as an executive bill by the governor, seeks to protect, promote, and enforce the rights of persons with disabilities across the state. It also provides for the establishment of a Disability Commission to champion accessibility, inclusion, and equality in all spheres of life.
Reacting to the development, Mr. Onah Adeyi, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Benue State chapter, described the move as historic and commendable. He noted that the governor’s decision to personally sponsor the bill underscores his commitment to the welfare and dignity of persons with disabilities.
“This is a clear demonstration of His Excellency’s leadership and vision for an inclusive Benue. By initiating and signing this law, he has proven to be a true champion of equality and social justice,” Adeyi said.
He further expressed appreciation to the Benue State House of Assembly for its role in passing the bill, assuring that the disability community is ready to partner with the government to ensure its effective implementation.
Governor Alia’s assent, stakeholders say, sends a strong message of hope to persons with disabilities in the state, affirming that their rights are recognized and respected. The Act is expected to open doors for greater participation of persons with disabilities in governance, education, employment, and social development.
The signing of the Disability Act, observers believe, marks the dawn of a new era in Benue’s pursuit of inclusivity and equity.
