The Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities has flagged off the statewide Ramadan palliative food distribution for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state. The exercise took place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Commission’s temporary office in Tudun Wada, Gombe.
The initiative follows the earlier launch of the Ramadan food palliative programme by the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on February 27, 2026, at the state warehouse along Bajoga Road. The food items distributed, including rice and sugar, are aimed at supporting Persons with Disabilities across the state during the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Ishiyaku Adamu, expressed appreciation to the governor for adopting the twin-track approach to disability inclusion. He noted that the governor ensured mainstream inclusion by directing that representatives of Persons with Disabilities be included at all levels of the Ramadan palliative distribution committees, from the state level down to the local government and ward levels. He added that the governor also approved a separate allocation of Ramadan food items specifically for Persons with Disabilities across the state’s 11 local government areas.
The food items were handed over to leaders of various disability associations, including groups representing persons who are blind, deaf, those with mobility impairments, persons affected by leprosy, spinal cord injuries, and albinism. The chairman urged association leaders to ensure fairness and transparency during the distribution process, noting that a supervisory committee made up of members of the Commission’s board and leaders of disability associations has been constituted to oversee the exercise.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Abdulmumini Bello, expressed gratitude to the governor for his continued support and concern for the disability community.
Also speaking, the APC Disability Leader in the state, Yakubu Ahmad, highlighted several achievements of the administration for Persons with Disabilities, including the establishment of the disability commission, renovation of special schools, and appointments of Persons with Disabilities into party and government structures. He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind, especially during the sacred month of Ramadan.
