The Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria are requesting for recognition in the nation’s health system in order to be accorded security and proper health management.
To this end, the Deaf Women Association in Kaduna has demanded that a special unit for people with hearing impairment and disability be created at public hospitals which will provide for their health and security, INN reports
In a statement issued by Hajara Makarfi on behalf of the deaf women, she noted that the demand has become necessary, due to the sudden disappearance of a day-old-baby born to deaf parents at Yusuf Dantsoho General Hospital, Tudun Wada, Kaduna to guide against future occurrence.
She said, “We are saddened with the news making the round of a missing baby of deaf parents which occurred on the 10th of January 2018 at Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital popularly known as “Asibitin Dutse.
“Indeed, this incident came to us as a shock especially at this new year which we are all looking forward to, with great hope and expectations.
“We, in our capacity as Deaf Women in Kaduna, visited the parents of the stolen baby at the hospital to commiserate with them over the unfortunate incident”, she said.
Makarfi therefore called on the management of the hospital and government to beef up security at the hospital and to ensure compliance with visitors’ time table in order to avoid influx of visitors at odd hours.
She urged the state government to provide “disabled-friendly unit at all government owned hospitals to provide services for its disabled populace.
It could be recalled that INN reported earlier this year, precisely in January, of a new born baby of deaf parents who was stolen by unknown person at the Yussuf Dantsoho Hospital located in Tundun Wada area of Kaduna, a stone throw from the Kaduna State Government House, in Kaduna North Local Government.
The deaf community then organized a mass protest demanding that the hospital produce the missing new born baby.
