The Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN) has called on the Federal Government to strengthen healthcare structures to better meet the medical needs of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), particularly those with Down syndrome.
The President of DSFN, Mrs. Rose Mordi, made the appeal during a health walk in Lagos to commemorate the 2025 Down Syndrome Awareness Month, themed “Inclusive Healthcare Support for All.”
Mordi noted that October is globally recognized as Down Syndrome Awareness Month, aimed at promoting inclusion, acceptance, and understanding of people living with the condition.
She expressed concern that people with Down syndrome often face neglect in the nation’s healthcare system, which lacks adequate facilities and equipment to address their unique medical challenges.
“Many children with Down syndrome are born with heart defects that require surgery. Unfortunately, due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure, parents are forced to seek treatment abroad, which is very expensive,” she said.
Mordi lamented that the high cost of foreign medical care, coupled with economic hardship, often leads to preventable deaths among children with Down syndrome. She therefore urged the government to strengthen local healthcare systems to provide necessary interventions within Nigeria.
“We want a system that can cater to their health needs right here at home. The manpower exists, but the right structures and equipment are lacking,” she emphasized.
Also speaking, the National Administrator of the Foundation, Mrs. Nike Denis, said the health walk aimed not only to raise awareness but also to promote full inclusion and equal rights for PWDs.
“People with Down syndrome have the same dreams and ambitions as everyone else. When their health is prioritized, they can live fulfilling lives and contribute meaningfully to society,” Denis said.
A parent, Mr. Emmanuel Okoesele, urged the government to enact stronger laws recognizing the rights and contributions of PWDs.
“Many parents are struggling to care for their children with disabilities. Government must do more to support them and promote awareness so that society understands their value and potential,” he said.
