by Inclusive News Network

The Federal Government has pledged to ensure greater inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the nation’s healthcare system by implementing actionable policies.

This commitment was emphasized on Tuesday by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, during an event marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Abuja. Represented by Dr. John Ovuoraye, Director of Gender, Adolescent, School Health, and Elderly Division at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Salako underscored the government’s focus on achieving universal health coverage that incorporates the needs of PWDs.

The theme for this year’s celebration, “Leadership of Persons with Disabilities: A Pathway to an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” highlights the importance of PWDs’ participation in driving inclusive policies.

Dr. Salako acknowledged the sobering insights of the 2022 World Report on Disability but noted significant steps taken by the Ministry to enhance inclusivity. He highlighted the development of the National Policy on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which addresses the unique health concerns of women and girls with disabilities.

“The Ministry will continue to prioritize quality healthcare for all Nigerians, aligning with the Ministerial Blueprint, the Sector-Wide Approach, and the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative,” Dr. Salako affirmed.
