The Ability Life Initiative (TALI) has called on federal agencies and policymakers to dismantle barriers that prevent Nigerians with disabilities from enjoying equal access to housing and transportation.
This appeal came during a high-level Stakeholders’ Forum on Inclusive Transport and Accessible Housing at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) headquarters in Abuja. The event convened representatives from the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, civil society groups, and disability advocates.
TALI Co-founder, Dr. Prada Uzodimma, stressed that persons with disabilities should be key decision-makers in policy formulation and execution. She highlighted Nigeria’s obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018, warning that urgent measures are needed before the OHCHR’s reporting deadline.
NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, reiterated that access to transport and housing is a basic human right, noting that the discussions align with Human Rights Council Resolution 55/8, which mandates global action on disability-inclusive infrastructure.
On his part, NCPWD Executive Secretary, Barrister Ayuba Gufwan, urged strict enforcement of Section 9 of the Disability Act to guarantee equal access to services and facilities nationwide.
The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) also reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive development, with Arch. Peter Okpanachi, General Manager of Partnerships and Zonal Coordination, pledging to prioritize affordable and accessible housing in line with Nigeria’s international commitments under the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).
Closing the event, Uzodimma underscored the broader vision behind accessible infrastructure. “It’s about creating a society where no one is left behind—a society where every citizen can move freely, live with dignity, and play a meaningful role in nation-building,” she said.
