An educational transformation initiative aimed at strengthening inclusive learning and digital awareness has recorded significant milestones in three special schools across Delta State, following the successful completion of its midterm implementation phase.
The project, led by Project Lead Njelita Amala Emmanuel, was implemented at the Special Primary School for the Deaf, Ughelli; Domingo’s College, Edjeba, Warri; and the Government School for Persons with Disabilities, Asaba. It focuses on improving inclusive classroom practices while integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) awareness for deaf and special needs learners.
At the midterm stage, 31 teachers received training in deaf education pedagogy, inclusive teaching strategies, and effective classroom management, while 58 students were reached through ICT literacy awareness and introductory digital learning sessions. The initiative is designed to bridge learning gaps and equip both educators and learners with skills essential for inclusive education in the digital age.
Field assessments revealed that although some ICT facilities exist in the schools, access remains limited for certain disability groups. This finding underscores the urgent need for trained ICT teachers, improved infrastructure, and structured policies that support inclusive digital learning environments. Participating students expressed strong enthusiasm for the ICT sessions and appealed for the programme to be expanded to all classes.
School administrators commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful, and called for sustained support to deepen inclusive education across Delta State. The final phase of the project will feature advanced pedagogical training in collaboration with the Deaf Teachers Association of Nigeria (DTAN) and the National Association of Nigerian Deaf Students (NANDS), as the project continues toward full implementation.
