The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the welfare, rights, and full inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), with renewed emphasis on strengthening advocacy initiatives and support systems across the state.
Chairman of the Edo State Disability Commission, Hon. Theophilus Egbodion, gave the assurance while receiving members of the Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities of Nigeria (AIDDN), Edo State Chapter, during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s office in Benin City.
Egbodion explained that the establishment of the Commission followed years of sustained advocacy by the disability community and stakeholders, aimed at ensuring that persons with disabilities are given a stronger voice, greater visibility, and meaningful participation in governance and development processes.
He emphasized that the Commission remains committed to championing policies and programmes that safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, enhance their living conditions, and promote inclusive development in the state. He also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his support and leadership in setting up the Commission.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the AIDDN State Chairman, Ambassador Onome Emmanuel Otueroro, said the purpose of the visit was to congratulate the leadership of the Commission and formally introduce the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) cluster, which he described as one of the most underserved and often overlooked groups within the disability community.
Otueroro further noted that the association is seeking strategic collaboration with the Commission to advance inclusive policies, improve access to essential services, and implement sustainable interventions for children and adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Edo State.
He added that persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities frequently face stigma, discrimination, and limited opportunities, stressing that with adequate support, empowerment, and inclusive policies, they can contribute meaningfully to society and national development.
