The Isaac Joshua Initiative for Disabilities (IJID) has issued a strong call to action, urging the Delta State Government and relevant stakeholders to immediately commence full implementation of the Delta State Protection of Persons with Disabilities Law, which was passed by the State House of Assembly on March 12, 2024.
Describing the legislation as a significant milestone in the advancement of disability rights in the state, IJID expressed disappointment that more than a year after its passage, little has been done to translate the law into practical change. As a result, over 130,000 persons with disabilities in Delta State remain at risk of persistent discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion from socio-economic opportunities.
According to the group, despite their qualifications, many persons with disabilities continue to be shut out of employment opportunities and public life. Societal stereotypes, deep-rooted biases, and physical barriers in infrastructure have created an environment where survival and dignity remain daily struggles for many in the disability community.
IJID is urging the Delta State Government to demonstrate commitment by establishing and properly funding the Disability Rights Commission as provided in the law. It also stressed the need for a state-wide public enlightenment campaign to raise awareness about the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Furthermore, the group emphasized the importance of ensuring that public buildings, transportation systems, healthcare, and educational institutions are accessible to all. Equally critical, IJID noted, is the inclusion of persons with disabilities in policy formulation and governance processes.
At the heart of the group’s advocacy is a vision of a Delta State where inclusivity is not a mere ideal but a lived reality. “We believe that a truly inclusive Delta State is possible—and it begins with honoring the rights of every citizen, regardless of ability,” the statement read. “We call on all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and ensure no one is left behind.”
