Abuja, February 10, 2026 — The National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD) has intensified its advocacy for the strict enforcement of Nigeria’s Accessibility Regulations, following a strategic courtesy visit to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in Abuja.
During the visit, the association emphasized the need for urgent action to remove physical and structural barriers across public and private spaces, including government buildings, transportation systems, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and major road networks. Vice President of NAPWPD, Ambassador Mabe Awala Beatrice, urged the Commission to strengthen monitoring, enforcement, and public awareness to fast-track nationwide compliance.
She commended NCPWD for its ongoing efforts in promoting inclusion but stressed that more proactive measures were required to ensure that accessibility standards translate into real-life improvements for persons with disabilities across the country.
Responding, the Director of Compliance and Enforcement, Barrister Nkem Uchebulam, reaffirmed the Commission’s statutory responsibility to protect disability rights and pledged sustained action towards the progressive enforcement of accessibility standards. He said NCPWD remains resolute in its mission to achieve full inclusion and equal participation for persons with disabilities.
The Director of Social Integration, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, highlighted the importance of consistent engagement within the disability community, while the Executive Secretary, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, outlined ongoing initiatives, enforcement strategies, and partnerships targeted at promoting inclusive infrastructure.
Both NCPWD and NAPWPD concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to joint advocacy and sustained collaboration towards building an inclusive society in line with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
